Newtown Theatre to screen “Winged Migration” documentary

Posted

The historic Newtown Theatre will screen “Winged Migration” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.

The documentary screening is co-hosted by Lower Makefield Township and Newtown Township Bird Towns and Matt Truesdale, an environmental education specialist at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Truesdale will introduce the film, answer questions at the end, and provide attendees with the opportunity to sign up for one of his guided bird walks at the park.

“Winged Migration” presents an epic portrait of winter bird migration. Filmed on all seven continents over four years, the footage is brought together into one portrait of a journey that’s uniformly arduous for all kinds of different birds.

Rather than concentrating on statistics and facts, the film near-wordlessly portrays the sheer physical effort demanded of the birds on their disparate routes. Along the way, viewers see the many dangers they face, from man-made waste to a group of hungry crabs.

Most of the footage was shot using in-flight cameras, allowing the viewer to “fly” alongside the birds of successive species, especially Canada geese. They traverse every kind of weather and landscape, covering vast distances in a flight for survival.

Tickets for this one-night-only screening at 120 N. State St. in Newtown Borough are available at the box office starting 30 minutes before the movie starts. All seating is general admission.
