In Tuesday’s District One playoff action, No. 11 Central Bucks West (19-8), an SOL Tournament finalist, erased a 20-8 deficit at No. 6 Methacton but fell 54-51 in a back and forth second-round 6A game.
Julian Phillips scored 22 for West. The Bucks smothered No. 22 Pennsbury 48-33 in Friday’s first round behind Bowen Gugger’s 16 points and great defense.
CB West heads to Friday playbacks at No. 3 Spring-Ford, who was upset by No. 14 Garnet Valley 63-49.
The No. 3 Solebury Spartans (15-11) had a PAISSA Commonwealth Cup semifinal at No. 2 Abington Friends Wednesday. Solebury overcame a 10-point deficit to beat No. 6 Shipley 60-57 on Valentine’s Day and advance to the semis. Makhai Anderson scored 29 and Tyler Simpson added 16.
Last Thursday, the No. 4 Spartans fell to No. 1 Cristo Rey 78-51 in the Penn-Jersey Athletic Association semifinals. Solebury handled No. 5 Kohelet Yeshiva 70-48 in the Feb. 8 quarterfinal to earn the matchup with Cristo Rey. Joell Idrovo scored 19 points.
No. 7 South Hunterdon (8-14, 4-4 Skyland Mountain) hosts No. 10 STEMCivics on Feb. 22 in the first round of Central Jersey Group 1 sectionals. South Hunterdon won the Jan. 10 meeting 72-62 behind a monster double-double (26 points and 16 rebounds) from Aaron Zalescik. These teams met in the first round of 2019 sectionals, a STEMCivics upset win.
No. 18 William Tennent (15-8) and No. 20 Council Rock South (14-9) bowed out Friday night in the first round of the District One 6A tournament. Tennent fell at No. 15 Downingtown West 68-58. CR South lost to No. 13 Plymouth Whitemarsh 77-55. Gabe Cerulli, Timmy Rahill and Ryan Wekluk all scored in double figures for South.
In Class 2A, the Faith Christian Lions (18-7) closed the regular season 5-1. The No. 2 Lions lost to No. 3 Delco Christian 85-68 in Tuesday’s District One semifinal. Delco Christian plays rival No. 1 Dock Mennonite on Saturday for the district title.
No. 4 Plumstead Christian (10-14) closed the regular season as winner of six of its last nine. The Panthers fell to No. 1 Phil-Mont Christian 55-40 in Tuesday’s Class A semifinal. Phil-Mont clinches one of the two state berths.
Archbishop Wood (15-8) eagerly awaited the result of the late Wednesday Philadelphia Catholic League semifinal to see if its season would continue. No. 6 Father Judge upset No. 3 Wood, which carried a 10-game win streak into last Friday’s PCL quarterfinal, 78-71. If No. 1 Roman Catholic beats Judge in the semifinals, Wood would get a slot in the District 12 6A playoffs. A Judge win would end Wood’s season.
Wood seniors Jalil Bethea, a Miami signee, and Drexel-bound Josh Reed were named to the PCL first team. Wood has been to three straight PIAA final fours.
