The Upper Makefield Township Police Department has a new full-time officer, but he’s a familiar face.
At a public meeting March 21, the township’s board of supervisors appointed Andrew Nagle to the patrolman’s role. Previously, Nagle had served as a part-time officer in the department.
Nagle is replacing officer Justin Edwards, who resigned in what officials described as a decision to make a career change.
Township Manager Dave Nyman said the department will look to fill the part-time role formerly held by Nagle. The to-be-hired part-timer could eventually step into a full-time position to account for another soon-expected vacancy due to a different officer’s planned retirement, Nyman said.
Officials can’t publicly identify the officer retiring as it’s currently a matter of negotiations, said Nyman.
The township manager said the police force has adequate manpower. “There are no coverage concerns,” Nyman said.
Beyond Upper Makefield, Nagle has police officer experience with other departments in Bucks County. Those include Tullytown, Morrisville and Yardley.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Rutgers University. Beyond being a fully trained officer, he has experience with information technology and with police radio programming/repair, according to a resume.
The Upper Makefield Township Police Department provides 24/7 protection to the municipality, which U.S. Census estimates say has a population of nearly 8,900 people. Mark Schmidt is chief.
The department is accredited by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association. Accreditation is a means to evaluate and improve a department’s performance by creating – and meeting – standards for best practices, policies and procedures for police forces.
