Tinicum bridge saga a good theme for a novel

Posted

As we approach another holiday season of gift giving I’m realizing that the opening of the Headquarters Road Bridge will not be a present that I will receive this year.

In a past issue of the Herald dated March 18, 2021, I expressed my views on the bridge as to why PennDOT insists on a two-lane bridge.

At a recent township meeting Luke Sorenson commented on Route 29 in New Jersey stating it is closed to truck traffic because it is a designated scenic highway. This should be an eye opener to Tinicum residents. Does PennDOT want Headquarters Road to be a route for the trucking of natural resources to Philadelphia and Jersey for export?

Why not repair the existing piers, construct a new deck and keep it a one lane bridge but widen it slightly, flair each entrance to accommodate larger vehicles and have Tinicum take over the maintenance? (if built correctly the cost should be minimal.)

It will be interesting to see what happens to this historic bridge in the future. It possibly could be the basis for a New York Times bestselling novel or better yet a mini-series for television. I hope readers attend township meetings to express opinions and maybe land a leading role in a movie.
