The Newtown Experience offers a weekend of history, culture, and community

Posted

The Newtown Historic Association hosts “The Newtown Experience,” a weekend of events set to take place on Oct. 6 and 7.

The unique celebration promises to transport attendees back in time to explore the rich history, culture, and vibrant community of Newtown, Pennsylvania.

Event 1 is “Spirits of the Outlaws: The Doan Gang & Bucks County Taverns.”

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, the Newtown Theatre (120 N. State St., Newtown) will host a presentation that delves into the history of the Doan Gang. Comprised of British loyalists, this notorious group of outlaws left their mark on Bucks County during the American Revolution.

Mercer Museum Library Director Annie Halliday and Exhibit Specialist Clint Flack will lead a discussion, shedding light on the gang’s criminal activities and their connections to Colonial Bucks County taverns.

Tickets are available for purchase on the Newtown Theatre website at Doan Gang Presentation Tickets or at 215-968-4004.

Event 2 is Newtown Historic Market Day.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, (rain date Oct. 8) the Half-moon Inn and the Historic Newtown Borough roads of Court Street and Centre Avenue will come alive with Newtown Historic Market Day. This beloved annual tradition, now in its 47th year, offers a glimpse into Colonial America.

Over 100 artists, artisans, and craftspeople will showcase their wares, creating an immersive experience reminiscent of Newtown’s early days. Attendees can enjoy live music, sample artisan foods, and participate in a wide range of colonial activities, including historic reenactments, corn shucking, puppet shows, candle making, and even a pie-eating contest.

Musical talents featured at this year’s event include Bill Dooley at the Half-moon Inn, Steve Tourison (10 a.m. to noon), and Mike Pfeiffer (1 to 3 p.m.) at the Callahan Research Center.

A raffle will also take place, offering the chance to win generous prizes, including $200 gift cards for dinner at the Black Bass Hotel and the Golden Pheasant Inn. Raffle tickets are available for $2 each or $10 for a book of six. The drawing will occur around 3:30 p.m., and participants need not be present to win.
