Spartans baseball guns for league title

Posted

The Solebury Spartans have a chance to win their first Penn-Jersey Athletic Association (PJAA) baseball title since 2006.

Beating No. 7 Phelps School 3-0 in last Thursday’s quarterfinals, put the No. 2 Spartans in Tuesday’s semifinals against No. 3 Barrack Hebrew. Solebury won 7-6, giving it a 2-0-1 record against the Cougars this spring. The Spartans face off against the No. 1 New Foundations/No. 4 Community Academy of Philadelphia (CAP) winner for the PJAA championship Thursday. First pitch of the title tilt is at 4 p.m. at the MSI Sports Complex in Aston.

Solebury’s 6-1-1 record was tops in the Blue (more competitive) Division. They split their regular season series with New Foundations, with the road team taking both games. Solebury won 8-5 on April 6. New Foundations claimed the May 3 game 12-8. The Spartans have not played CAP, from the White Division.

The Spartans (8-2-1) have averaged 9.5 runs per game this spring. Head coach Greg Lewis hopes that the bats have that kind of firepower remaining for one more game.
