Solebury cagers tip off playoffs

Posted

January Madness anyone?

Both Solebury School basketball teams started their playoff runs this week.

The No. 3 Spartan boys (11-9, 7-5 PJAA Blue) opened the post season by cruising to a 77-49 win over No. 6 New Foundations in Penn-Jersey Athletic Association divisional play. It was Solebury’s third win over the Bulldogs this season by 18 or more points. Joell Idrovo scored his season-high 30 points in Solebury’s Jan. 12 81-52 win over New Foundations.

The Spartans await No. 2 Cristo Rey in the Blue divisional semifinals on Thursday. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the PJAA invitational postseason conference tournament that starts on Feb. 7, but with its strong resume, Solebury is likely to snag an at-large bid win or lose.

The No. 3 Spartan girls (5-7, 4-6 PJAA White) played No. 6 Villa Victoria in a late Wednesday game to open the divisional playoffs. The winner faces No. 2 The City School on Thursday.

The Spartan girls struggled to close the year, but they soundly defeated Villa Victoria in the two times the teams met. Freshman Autumn Turner and junior Tyler Joseph are the team’s leading scorers.
