The softball season might not get cranking until April, but March provided a number of storylines for Suburban One League softball teams.
In the National, Council Rock South opened 4-0 (2-0 SOL). The Golden Hawks offense has scored 34 runs in their first four games for new coach Scott Molle. UMass-Lowell signee Grace Stepp thumped two doubles in CR South’s 12-1 opening win over Bensalem. Ace Lexi Waring whiffed six and Helen Woloshyn stole her 100th career base in South’s final game before spring break, a 12-2 win over Neshaminy. CR South travels to Pennsbury Friday.
In the Liberty, Quakertown (4-0, 2-0 SOL) became the first team to reach four wins. Quakertown won the Liberty Division last year, after running the table in the SOL. Ace Abbey Wagner, a Kutztown-signee, and her defense have yielded just six runs in the Panthers’ opening four games: a 10-0 mercy rule of Upper Perkiomen, a 5-1 win over Upper Dublin, a 5-3 victory at Central Bucks West and a 9-2 defeat of Plymouth Whitemarsh just before spring break. Offensively, sophomore Kira Jefferson has already left the yard twice. Quakertown visits Hatboro-Horsham Friday.
North Penn, the defending state champion, had been the standard bearer in the SOL Colonial for years. The Knights hadn’t lost to a Central Bucks team since May 2019 … until CB West stunned them 6-5 on March 26.
North Penn ace Bella Nunn retired the first 12 Bucks she faced, and the Knights had a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. But Ana Glemser socked a two-run triple and scored on Chloe Dryden’s sacrifice fly, to cut the lead to 5-3.
With the bases loaded, Jill Boyle, Glemser and Dryden respectively singled, walked and singled in the bottom of the seventh, with Dryden’s knock walking off the game.
The Bucks haven’t had a winning season since 2018; a win over the Knights brings optimism that that streak could end. CB West also beat Central Bucks East 16-1 on Opening Day. Molly Gibson and Laila Murray combined to go 5-for-5; each drove in two. West hosts Pennridge Friday.
In the SOL Freedom, New Hope-Solebury (3-1, 2-0 SOL) is writing a feel good story. With the Lions’ 6-5 win over Springfield on March 26, NH-S already equaled last year’s win total and SOL win total. After dropping its opener to Dock Mennonite, NH-S outslugged Cheltenham 15-13 on March 21 behind Dagny Mobley’s six RBIs; NH-S beat Plumstead Christian 13-1 the next day.
Mabel Klossner banged a two-run walk-off single to top Springfield, a back and forth game that was scoreless through four innings.
The Lions return to action Friday at home against William Tennent.
