On Saturday, March 9, the Lehigh Valley Hooligans traveled down to the Maennerchor Field to face off against the Doylestown Rugby Football Club men’s team.

This match contained a lot of firsts for the Dragons; their first spring match, their first match with a new coaching staff headed by Jeremy Ault, and the first match for several of their players.

At 1 p.m., in the rain and on the muddy pitch, the whistle blew and the Dragons came out firing on all cylinders. However, it was Lehigh who put the first points on the board, with a try and conversion. This left the Dragons playing catch up early in the match. That did not deter the men and they fired back. The first half ended with a score of 10-7 Dragons, after two trys by Brian Stella.

Throughout the second half, the weather and field conditions challenged both teams. However, it was Kevin Belmont who intercepted a pass on Lehigh’s 5-meter line and touched it down to give the Dragons that spark they needed. Kevin Hockings made the conversion, bringing the score to 17-12. After a lot of back and forth, Julio Marsiglia ran in another try, making the final score 22-12 for a Dragons’ win. Lehigh Valley had two trys and one conversion. Matt “Freddy” Frederick won Man of the Match for the Dragons and Sean Cotton was named Hard Hat of the Match for doing what he does best, hitting hard and being a wrecking ball.

The next match for Doylestown will be on Saturday, March 16, at the home pitch, Maennerchor Field, 3650 Cold Spring Creamery Road, Doylestown, against Blackthorn RFC. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.

In a home non-league match on Sunday, March 10, the Doylestown Rugby Academy high school boys A side defeated Union (NJ) 53-0. The B side won 20-0. Try scorers for Doylestown were Cade Aivazian (four), Bailey O’Malley (one), Zach Venziale (one), Joey Craig (one), Nick Vyvlecka (one) and Nolan Corey (one). Craig kicked four conversions. Aivazian was Man of the Match.

On Sunday, March 17, the Dragons will play St. Joe’s Prep at the home pitch at Maennerchor Field. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
