Our Community Salutes recognizes graduating seniors enlisting in armed forces

Posted

Bucks County Our Community Salutes hosted a student enlistee recognition program May 17, beginning with a welcome reception, at The Brookside Manor at Somerton Springs in Feasterville.

The event honors local high school seniors who are enlisting into the armed forces upon graduation.

Sixteen seniors from various Bucks County high schools and their military recruiters were honored during the dinner ceremony. The enlistees were issued certificates and letters of appreciation from state Rep. Brian Monroe and received their first military challenge coin.

David McCormick and Staff Sgt. Dave Jacoby from the Air National Guard were the keynote speakers. Veteran Service Organizations like Navy Federal and USAA, Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. PA9 were in attendance to provide useful information for the families.

The first Our Community Salutes chapter was started by Dr. Ken Hartman in New Jersey in 2009 and the idea has now spread across the country. Our Community Salute’s mission is to honor and thank graduating seniors for their service, in advance, so they know their hometown is appreciative of their decision to serve. The nonprofit Bucks County OCS chapter was started to ensure the young patriots are not forgotten.

Events are planned and carried out by volunteers, including veterans, educators, community leaders and active-duty military personnel. Individuals and business leaders from the community have really stepped up to sponsor this event.
