The Bucks County District Attorney's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a 40-year-old man dead in Northampton Township Sunday.
Bucks County Coroner Meredith Buck identified the man as Mark Chambers, of Northampton.
The shooting happened at 7:29 p.m. Nov. 5, in the 500 block of Elm Avenue in Churchville. Chambers was transported to St. Mary Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 8:06 p.m.
When the police responded to the scene, Buck said via email, they were reportedly met by a man wielding a large knife coming toward them.
“The initial 911 call was requesting police intervention for the man attempting to take his own life with said knife,” according to Buck.
A Northampton Township police officer was also treated for injuries sustained in the incident, the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office said.
The DA’s Office and its detectives were notified of the shooting; they responded and are now leading the investigation.
The District Attorney’s Office said it would make a determination on the shooting once the investigation is complete. Until that time, the DA’s Office said in a statement on Crimewatch, and via email, the office would have no further comment and would not release the names of any of the parties involved.
After an autopsy today, Buck reported Chambers’ cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and determined the manner of death as homicide.
Buck emphasized, “It is important to note that ‘homicide’ as a manner of death refers to death at the hands of another.” She further stated, “This matter remains under investigation by the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.”
Additionally, Buck said she extends her “office’s deepest condolences to the decedent’s family and friends with thoughts and concerns extended to the entire Northampton Police Department during this tragic time.”
