Mayoral primary critical in Lambertville, N.J.

Posted

The New Jersey Democratic primary election on June 8 for mayor of Lambertville is critical.

Andrew Nowick does not have experience or the knowledge that comes with the job. He says he opposes “debt.” Yet debt allowed new street surfacing all over town, an elevator for handicapped access to City Hall, generators, repair of City Hall and library roofs and more.

But Mr. Nowick, blaming former Mayor David DelVecchio for “debt,” campaigns on the promise of more debt – accelerated funding of city building repair work and a $3.5 million purchase of the Closson property, for a start.

Mr. Nowick called overdevelopment a red herring for Lambertville because we are too developed to face development issues. Yet my neighborhood is forced to fight hard trying to stop a four-townhouse development in a space that can accommodate three. And we may lose against developer politics. Not a red herring to us.

Mr. DelVecchio has experience in control of taxes and spending. And he learned hard lessons these past two years.

He has committed to more communication, specific plans for better city buildings and improving our local business climate. When asked his intentions for a city that seems more divided, he pledged, if he is fortunate to win, specifically the inclusion of Mr. Nowick and residents more broadly in renewed efforts for our city.

Judith Gleason, Lambertville
