“Living Out Loud: The A. Aladar Marberger Collection” to be auctioned at Rago/Wright

Posted

Rago/Wright Auction House is holding its upcoming rare auction, “Living Out Loud: The A. Aladar Marberger Collection,” at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13. It is now available to preview in Lambertville, N.J.

The auction will feature works from Marberger’s esteemed collection, which are offered for the first time since his passing in 1988.

Aladar Marberger had an enormous impact on New York’s art scene in the 70s and 80s. This period was transformative for the art world, establishing an eruption of dealers and gallerists that would later become the foundation for the art world itself.

As director of Fischbach Gallery and known as “The Wunderkind of 57th Street,” Marberger was a pivotal figure, representing talents like Alex Katz and Robert Swain. His collection reflects his journey, deeply influenced by his mentor and friend, Elaine de Kooning.

Key callouts from the collection are Elaine de Kooning’s paintings of Aladar: “Aladar #3” (estimated at $40,000-60,000) and “Aladar” (estimated at $25,000-35,000).

“Aladar #3” is an extraordinary portrait that captures both Marberger’s intensity and the lifelong bond between the artist and gallerist and was included in the seminal exhibition: “Elaine de Kooning: Portraits” in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in 2015-2016. Rago/Wright has the original video of Elaine painting Aladar for “Aladar #3” – a unique piece of media from a documentary film Aladar made in 1988.
