Thoughts from an Epicure: Less than cherr-ific pies

Posted

In the Aug. 24 issue of the Bucks County Herald, I wrote about some of the disasters Patti and I have made while preparing food. I asked you, our readers, to share some of your “mistakes.”

One friend told me about the time he really messed up a pie. He usually was good at making pies. However, a few years ago, he felt his family was eating too much sugar. Since his cherry tree was loaded with fruit, he decided to make a cherry pie. To lower the sugar content, he cut the called for amount of sugar in half. The pie turned out perfectly. However, it wasn’t fit to eat because it was so sour. He ate one piece, while others in the family took a bite but wouldn’t eat any more. He never did that again.

Cherry pies seemed to be the “disaster issues,” A reader emailed, “No one could make this mistake twice. Many years ago, not long after my husband and I were married, we were invited to a family gathering and were asked to “bring something to share.” Having several cherry trees, my husband suggested I make a cherry pie. I carefully shopped for all of the ingredients for a successful crust and tasty filling. Everything was going great until it was time to mix the cherries. But I forgot one very important thing – the cherries had to be pitted! Not enough time for this so I made the pie with the pits! Everyone had a good laugh but no one dared eat the pie. To this day, I’m still asked to bring a cherry pie.”

Thanks to those who responded. If you have had a kitchen disaster, please share it with the rest of us. We all need a good laugh, as well as a reminder that everyone makes mistakes.

Enjoy and stay cool!
