The Poet's Corner

Instructions for Morning

Posted

Now, in September,

now, before it is too late,

take off your shoes and walk out

into the garden.

Walk out into the garden

and if the sun be shining,

let it soak through your clothes

into your skin,

and if it be cloudy and chill,

feel the damp ground loving

the soles of your feet.

The soles of your feet press

the big Earth and it

presses back. Now,

let the garden act upon you

while it still can.

Now, in September,

notice the changing light,

how it is different even

from last year, how

your noticing is different.

Cleveland Wall is a poet, teaching artist, and sole librarian at tiny Books on the Hill, a mighty twig of the Bethlehem Area Public Library. Her work has appeared recently in Soup Can Magazine and Tidewise. She is the author of Let X=X and many small, handmade chapbooks.

Poet’s Corner is curated by Bucks County Poet Laureate Tom Mallouk and supported by a grant to the Bucks County Herald Foundation made possible by Marv and Dee Ann Woodall.

Note from the curator: Calling all Bucks County poets, the deadline for entering the poet laureate contest is fast approaching. Visit bucks.edu/poetlaureateentry and send your 10 best poems. Good luck!”

To submit a poem for consideration, email it to Heraldpoetscorner@gmail.com. If the poem has been previously published, please say where it first appeared.
