After nine years in business, the owners of Guru’s Indian Cuisine, located at 203 N. Sycamore Street, have decided to temporarily close the Newtown restaurant.

Ashni “Baba” Kumar and Priya Guru are hitting the pause button for several months in order for the couple to concentrate on their three-year struggle to adopt two young sisters from India.

“It’s been an exhausting experience,” explained Priya. “We hope to travel to India in the coming weeks to complete the adoption process, and we hopefully will have some good news to share.”

The final day of service will be Sunday, Jan. 7. However, the Gurus are hosting a “so long for now” celebration that’s open to the public on Wednesday Jan. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. complete with complimentary cocktails and passed hors doeuvres. The Gurus are requesting a $20 donation from all attendees, which will go directly to Guru’s Guardian Angels, a nonprofit that the couple launched in September that is dedicated to rescuing and sheltering stray animals around the world. “This is a bittersweet announcement, but we plan to be back bigger and better than ever during the spring of 2024,” said Priya. “We cannot wait to relaunch and continue to serve the Newtown community as soon as possible.” Established in 2015, Guru’s Indian Cuisine is recognized for innovative interpretations of traditional Indian cuisine from diverse Indian states.
