Tuesday was a semi-sweet basketball day for many area teams.
Along with New Hope-Solebury, Archbishop Wood, Faith Christian and Upper Bucks Christian all played in girls basketball playoff semifinals on Tuesday. Wood and New Hope emerged as winners.
No. 1 Wood (19-5), which ran the table in Philadelphia Catholic League play, used a huge second quarter to put away No. 5 Nazareth Academy 63-45. Wood sank six threes and outscored the Pandas 28-7 over the eight minutes. The Vikings’ win streak extends to eight.
Wood beat No. 8 Conwell-Egan 74-30 in last Thursday’s quarterfinal. The day before, senior Ava Renninger (Fairleigh Dickinson) and Emily Knouse (St. Joseph) made the PCL first team.
Wood takes on No. 3 Archbishop Carroll in the PCL finals at the Palestra on Feb. 26. The Class 5A Vikings seek their first Philadelphia Catholic League title since 2021 and then their fourth straight state championship.
No. 1 Faith Christian (15-10) ended the regular season as winner of four of its last five. The Lions showed fight but fell to No. 4 Delco Christian 38-35 on Tuesday in the Class 2A semifinal. Delco moves on to play No. 2 Sacred Heart for the lone PIAA berth at Bensalem on Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m.
No. 2 Upper Bucks Christian (10-13) was seeking its first District One title. The team lost to No. 3 Phil-Mont Christian 41-31 in the Class A semifinal, ending its season. Three teams from the District One/12 combined regional make states.
No. 8 CB East (18-6) and No. 18 Council Rock South (15-8) had late Wednesday second-round games in the District One 6A tournament. The winner of each game advances to states; the loser still has a chance to get a PIAA berth through playbacks. Third-round games and playbacks are on Saturday.
The Patriots, runners-up in the SOL Colonial, earned a first-round bye and hosted No. 9 Neshaminy. Neshaminy, the winners of the SOL Tournament, defeated East 40-25 in the regular season.
Council Rock South earned its first playoff win since 2011 on Friday, when it topped No. 15 Unionville 43-40. The Golden Hawks were down 12-5 in the second quarter and rallied. Liliana Metrick, Kathryn O’Kane and Fiona Reckner all scored in double figures. CR South headed to No. 2 Conestoga Wednesday night.
South Hunterdon (7-18) concluded its regular season last Friday. The Eagles drew the 8 seed in the Central Jersey Group 1 tournament and will host No. 9 Keansburg on Feb. 22. Don’t let South Hunterdon’s record fool you; the Eagles were 5-4 against Group 1 competition this winter.
No. 23 Central Bucks South’s season ended on Friday night in the first round of the District One 6A playoffs. The Titans (12-11) lost at No. 10 WC Henderson 45-32. Mia Klein (12 points) and Yoyo Samayoa (10 points) led South.
