Friends invite community to observe Hiroshima Day in Doylestown

Posted

The public is invited to join Doylestown Friends Quaker Meeting in its annual observance of Hiroshima Day at the intersection of State and Main Streets in Doylestown between noon and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6.

The year 2023 marks the 78th anniversary of nuclear bombs being dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and at least 50 years that the local Quaker meeting has held this event.

Attendees will distribute origami cranes, which have become a symbol of commemoration of the bombings and of a commitment to peace and nuclear disarmament. Adults can make peace cranes and display them as talking points.

People who care about peace will come together to create awareness of nuclear threat, share information, and learn about Quakers’ work toward peace. Before the vigil, people may join Doylestown Friends for quiet contemplation in the meetinghouse (95 E. Oakland Ave.). Child care is provided.

Sadako was a Japanese girl who developed leukemia as a result of the bombings. While in the hospital in the 1950s, she folded hundreds of origami cranes before she died. A five-minute YouTube clip tells the story of Sadako for children and adults: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fABpssKWCoE.

A second five-minute YouTube clip shows how to make the cranes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsnEFQv3uCI.

Doylestown Friends Meeting meets for worship on Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. Doylestown Friends is an open and inclusive community, which welcomes guests. Visit https://doylestownquakers.org.
