Frenchtown Bookshop presents author of “American Ramble: A Walk of Memory and Renewal”

Posted

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 22, Frenchtown Bookshop will host author Neil King, Jr., the former Wall Street Journal reporter whose “exquisitely felt memoir of an American journey” (Ken Burns) describes his 330-mile walk from Washington, D.C., to New York City (including through Bucks, Mercer and Hunterdon counties).

King calls the walk “An unforgettable pilgrimage to the heart of America across some of our oldest common ground.”

In the spring of 2021, Washington-based journalist King was burdened by the country’s growing political divide, including the Jan. 6 insurrection, and from his own long battle with cancer. He set out to walk from Washington to New York City, to see the nation and its history with new eyes by paying close attention to the land he crossed and the people he met.

King walked 330 miles, including through farms, small towns, and historic battlefields and cemeteries in Bucks, Mercer, and Hunterdon counties, before crossing New York Harbor to his destination in Central Park. Along the way, he visited forgotten communities and overlooked people.

He discovered “the profound power of the ground we all share, despite our divisions.”

The author will read from and sign his book.
