As though a rivalry game wasn’t enough, both Council Rock North and South girls basketball teams entered Newtown Tuesday night a little ornery.
CR South (4-1, 2-1 SOL) was coming off an overtime loss to reigning SOL Patriot champ Neshaminy. CR North (3-3, 1-2 SOL) was stinging from Friday’s buzzer-beater loss to Bensalem. A win over an archrival would be a great salve.
The visiting Golden Hawks got the “W” and kicked off a South doubleheader basketball sweep. They built up a 27-14 lead on their way to a 50-34 win. South was helped by the season debut of Lily Bross, who scored seven. Fiona Reckner (12 points), the MVP of the opening weekend Jim Church Tournament, and Kathryn O’Kane (10 points) both scored in double figures for the fourth time in five games.
Delaney McCaffery’s 12 points led North. She has averaged over 14 points a game over the last four contests.
CR South, who finished third in last year’s Patriot, lost two players to Division II. But Jesse Krasna, a veteran coach in his first year with the Golden Hawks, returned a lot of fire power.
John Kelly has two strong seniors to build on with Ruth O’Keeffe and McCaffery. The Indians hope to improve on last year’s 9-13 mark.
The two teams rematch in Holland on Jan. 30.
