Bernice E. Whitehead

Bernice E. Whitehead, 88, of Ewing, New Jersey, died on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Capital Health, Hopewell Campus, NJ.

Born and raised in Lambertville, NJ, Bernice grew up in a large and loving family. She graduated from Lambertville High School. For over 20 years, Bernice served as a corrections officer at the Edna Mahon Women’s Correctional Institution in Clinton where she rose to the rank of Captain, only the second woman in the state’s history to attain that rank. She was a lifelong member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Lambertville and regularly volunteered for church activities.

Bernice was a good friend and neighbor. She kept in contact with her high school friends and regularly attended a monthly luncheon of her classmates. She was devoted to her family. A wonderful cook, she always hosted the family’s Thanksgiving dinner. As an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies, Bernice’s inner circle knew not to call while the game was on. She regularly took trips to Cape May where she visited with family and enjoyed long walks on the beach.

Bernice was the daughter of the late Harold J. and Edith Hann Whitehead and the sister of the late Phyllis J. Foss, Marion Polazneck, Lois Osmun, Leslie Whitehead and Charles Stanley Whitehead. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews and their families, her many associates, friends and neighbors and her extended family at Centenary United Melodist Church.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Highland Cemetery, 95 Hopewell Wertsville Road, Hopewell, NJ 08525.

Donations may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church, 108 N. Union Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
