Artists exhibit contemporary abstraction and expressive figuration

Posted

“Within You Without You” New Paintings by Gary Giordano and Paul Behnke will be on view Aug. 4 to 6, at Prallsville Mills – The Grist Mill, 33 Risler St., Stockton, N.J.

An opening reception is slated for 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 4. Show hours are noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 5 and 6.

The exhibition features contemporary abstraction and expressive figuration by local artists Gary Giordano and Paul Behnke.

The painters’ work communicates forays into the landscape of the unconscious that map connections to both artists’ interior worlds and their physical surroundings.

The work represents a conduit for dialogue between divergent ideologies, cultures and beliefs, and encourages viewers to better connect with their outer world by way of the inner.

Giordano was born in Trenton, N.J., and grew up in Yardley and Bucks County.

His work has been collected by private collectors in New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Bucks County, and is held throughout the United States. His public work is installed in a permanent placement in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Other public work has been shown in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Giordano draws inspiration from his dialog with contemporary art and artists, particularly those working in the Bushwick community in Brooklyn. He offers lectures on painting and private instruction.

Behnke was born in Memphis, Tenn. His paintings have been exhibited widely in the United States and internationally.

His work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic Weekend, The New Criterion and The New Republic. His writings have appeared online and in print publications.

Behnke was the co-editor of “Shad Runn,” a self-published art zine in Memphis. He has edited “Structure and Imagery: A Contemporary Art Blog” since 2011 and was the co-director of Stout Projects exhibition space in Bushwick, Brooklyn from 2015 to 2017.

After spending the last three years in Taos, N.M., Behnke currently lives and works in Frenchtown, N.J.
