The Art of the River Towns Artist of the Week: Richard Hoffman

Posted

This week we are featuring a participating artist from the Art of the River Towns Juried Show.

Art of the River Towns, presented by River Towns Magazine, was held Oct. 1 to 4, at Prallsville Mills in Stockton, N.J.

Richard Hoffman of Voorhees, N.J., is a watercolor artist and retired architect. He has exhibited in many shows in the Philadelphia, Bucks County and New Jersey area.

Hoffman has won many awards, including Best of Show at the Ellarslie Open in 2017 and Best Watercolor at the Philadelphia Sketch Club Domenic DiStefano Show in 2018. Most recently he was awarded the Philadelphia Watercolor Society’s 120th Exhibition Award for his painting “Camac Street,” now in the society’s online International Show.

“Hoffman’s architectural background complements his watercolor style without overpowering the freedom of expression found in watercolor techniques,” he said in his artist statement.

“His awareness of composition, shape, form and color is expressed in his paintings. He uses typical street scenes and landscapes to explore ways of letting color and value merge in the watercolor medium.”

Many of Hoffman’s paintings are of historic buildings and Delaware River town scenes. “Hoffman’s plein air paintings have a relaxed and loose style,” he said in his artist statement. “In the studio he paints with more detail to capture the expression of the subject.

Hoffman is a member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, Garden State Watercolor Society, Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie, New Jersey Watercolor Society, and the Medford Arts Center.

Works by Hoffman and over 100 other local artists can be found and purchased on the Art of the River Towns Online Sales Gallery through Dec. 31. The online gallery features over 400 unique works by local artists. For information, visit Rivertownsmagazine.com.
