Temple Judea will celebrate High Holy Days with new rabbi; public invited to open house

Posted
When members of Temple Judea of Bucks County gather to celebrate the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, they will do so with a new rabbi.

High Holy Days services for the Reform synagogue in Furlong will be led by Sigal Brier, who before coming to Temple Judea in July was the spiritual leader at Kesher Shalom in Abington.

Ordinated by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, Brier has been a congregational rabbi for a decade. She holds a master’s degree in organizational psychology from West Chester University. Brier is also a faculty member of the nonprofit Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Mass.

Brier is an Israeli-born scholar, spiritual mentor, inspirational teacher and artist whose background includes training in art, yoga and meditation. She teaches internationally and has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning News and National Public Radio.

The public is invited to meet the rabbi at an Open House Shabbat service held at the synagogue at 7 p.m. Sept. 20.

Congregants and their children will welcome Rosh Hashanah at 7 p.m. Sept. 29, with songs, prayers, apples and honey.

On Sept. 30, there will be three separate services with Young Families (preschool) meeting 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., Family Services, from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., with music, Torah reading and shofar blowing; and the Main Service beginning at 11:15 a.m.

The Main Service is for 13-year-olds and up and, in Brier’s words, will feature “a rich musical and contemplative experience for the heart and soul with Torah reading and the sound of the shofar.”

Kol Nidre services, at 7 p.m. Oct. 8, will provide a meditative musical evening for those over Bar and Bat Mitzvah age. The service is designed for personal reflection, clearing out the past and making way for the new.
Oct. 9, Yom Kippur services will take place from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. for Young Families and 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. for Family Services; with the Main Service at 11:15 a.m. Yizkor will take place at 1:30 p.m. There will be Text Study from 2:30 to 4 p.m., followed by an Evening and Nelia Service until 5:30 p.m., at which time worshippers will break their fast together.

Child care is available for a fee, but pre-registration is required. High Holiday tickets are free to members and can also be purchased through the temple website. For information, visit TempleJudea.org or phone the temple office at 215-348-5022.
