Expanding the Bucks County art tradition

Posted

From its inception in 1929, the Phillips’ Mill Art Show has attracted local landscape painters. George Sotter, for example, became famous for his rural night scenes. Times change, but painters still find our area worth capturing as their subject.
Innovating on that legacy, Martha Wirkijowski, 27, often chooses Lambertville and New Hope night scenes for her subjects. She photographs locations and then completes paintings in her studio because “I like the luminous colors seen only after dark. They’re challenging to mix. I focus most on conveying mood and atmosphere, but if viewers recognize the buildings I paint, that’s gratifying, too. The appearance of this area deserves to be recorded in every era.”
So the artists among us continue to show us familiar surroundings in a new light, literally.
