Phillips’ Mill ArtTalk features John Schmidtberger

Posted

“Poetic Realism” with John Schmidtberger, at 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, is the next ArtTalk presented by Phillips’ Mill Community Association.

Schmidtberger describes his work as “poetic realism.” He paints from direct observation of his subject without the use of photographs and with little or no revision.

He first entered the Phillips’ Mill Art Show in 1988 and took home an honorable mention. In the 32 years since, he’s been accepted numerous times. His work won the prestigious Patrons’ Award for Painting in 2019 and 2020.

Learn about Schmidtberger’s paintings, inspiration, and involvement with Phillips’ Mill, and explore the artist/gallerist intersection.

The discussion will be lead by Laura Womack, a former journalist in public radio who currently chairs the Phillips’ Mill Art Show.

Registration is required. RSVP by 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zZ1Zds-1Sy69WU9MLExtiw to receive your link.

Schmidtberger studied painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a BFA and an MFA.

His work has been widely exhibited in galleries locally, in New York, and in Maine. His work has been reviewed by the New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer. He is also known for his decorative art and children’s portraiture, which has been featured in Fine Art Connoisseur.

Schmidtberger lives with his family in Upper Black Eddy.
