JoAnne Wolke received the 34th annual Harold and Alma Abel Peace Award Sunday, Aug. 4, at Pebble Hill Interfaith Church in Doylestown.
Each year the church honors individuals and organizations for their efforts at peacemaking, with an emphasis on those who make a difference in the lives of others in the Bucks County area.
Wolke received the Peace Award for her many volunteer efforts. She works as a clothing designer at Thread Collective in New York. Through this job, Wolke is able to arrange for boxes of clothing to be donated to area homeless shelters.
She has taken on the expense of renting trucks and shipping truckloads of clothing for men, women and children of all ages. Recipients have included local nonprofit organizations, as well as indigenous boarding schools in South Dakota and Wisconsin and a sister community of Pebble Hill Church in Nicaragua.
“This is a way for me to give back to my native community as well, being a member of Standing Rock, Hunkpapa,” Wolke said.
“This volunteer spirit may not be for everyone, but it is an essential part of our community. Getting involved at Pebble Hill Church encouraged and inspired me to live a better life, have a more positive impact on where I put my time. ...
“It is an honor to give back to this community, my community, our community.”
Wolke is also the vice president of Arrows, a nonprofit group that helps Native American people.
