Betsy Crofts will moderate a discussion on “Continuing Conversations on Race” at the Newtown Quaker Meeting Adult Class at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the historic Friends Meetinghouse, 219 Court St., Newtown.
Meeting for Worship in the manner of Friends will follow at 11 a.m.
There will be brief presentations by three members of the Quaker Meeting – Susan Hoskins, John Davison and Claire Staffieri – who will each speak of a personal experience that opened their eyes and changed their perspective on race.
After the presentations, attendees will break into small groups to share their own experiences regarding race.
Crofts is a former teacher at George School; Hoskins is executive director of the Friends Council on Aging; Davison is a retired George School history teacher; and Staffieri is a former property manager.
Quakers believe there is “that of God in every person and each person is equal in the eyes of God,” and they have wrestled with the issues of slavery and civil rights since their early beginnings in 1652 England.
In 1727 in England and 1774 in America, Quakers became the first religious body to officially oppose slavery.
