Marigold was not right choice for state flower

Posted

What was David Burpee thinking? Lois McClintock’s story about Mr. Burpee’s advocating for the marigold to become the state flower was interesting. But for Mr. Burpee, the plantsman of Bucks County, to suggest corsages made of marigolds be worn on Inauguration Day’s breakfast at the Capitol was a bad idea.

Marigolds may be pretty but they have a potent odor that is a good deterrent for garden pests and predators. That’s why so may vegetable gardeners surround their plantings with marigolds.

I hope that Mr. Burpee accepted and was ultimately happy that Mother Nature felled the idea.
