Lambertville artist Elise Dodeles wins grant to paint women baseball players

Posted

Lambertville, N.J., artist Elise Dodeles has been selected to receive a Russell J. Efros Foundation-funded Sprout grant to paint a series of paintings of women playing baseball.
The Sprout fund typically awards grants to non-traditional projects, often with a focus on neglected subjects. Prior to obtaining this award, Dodeles had completed a series of paintings of Negro Leagues baseball players which was exhibited at the Central Pennsylvania African American Museum in Reading.
Additionally, she created a series of portraits of Olympic Club Fighters which received an Artist’s Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Dodeles will research female baseball players from the 19th century to today to inspire her work on this new project.
The parameters of the grant require the artist to complete the series within a year. While working on the series, Dodeles will exhibit the paintings both locally and nationally. The progress of the project can be followed on her website Elise Dodeles Art.

Dodeles began her professional artistic career in the seminal group exhibit “Part Fantasy” at Nicola Tyson’s project space in New York.
Her early work is included in Harmony Hammond’s groundbreaking 2000 survey “Lesbian Art in America,” published by Rizzoli. Locally, she has exhibited at New Hope Arts, Phillips’ Mill, Artists of Yardley, and the Quiet Life Gallery.
Dodeles obtained her Master’s in Fine Art from the New York Academy of Art.
