John Lennon’s carved lyrics on display at Lambertville Shop

Posted

Lovronic Antiques - Gotta Have It Vinyl, a shop in Lambertville, N.J., has a big day planned for Saturday, June 5. The shop’s proprietor, William Watkins, is dedicating the day to The Beatles.
The show will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the gallery, 15 N. Union St.

There will be live music, food and rock memorabilia.
A highlight of the day will be the display of John Lennon’s own hand-etched lyrics to “Sexy Sadie” recorded in “The White Album.”

Lennon carved the lyrics after the Beatles’ stay in India in 1968, where they participated in meditation and lectures by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The song was originally titled “Maharishi” but Lennon became disillusioned with the Maharishi and his alleged indiscretions with women.

Beatle George Harrison, who continued to support the Maharishi, asked for the title to be changed to “Sexy Sadie.”
The wood was kept by Maureen Starkey, Ringo Starr’s former wife, and was later sold to a Beatles collector. It sold at auction in London in 2013.

“Nothing less than one of the rarest finds in Beatles history,” a rock and roll memorabilia expert said at the time.
