Doylestown Presbyterian celebrates Black History

Posted

As Doylestown Presbyterian Church continues to celebrate Black History Month, it invites the community to visit its website to read about the unique and impactful life experiences of DPC member Nancy Nelson, whose parents were both key figures in Doylestown.

Visitors can also hear from voices from the past through historical research of the African-Americans buried in the church’s historic graveyard, with the option of taking a self-guided tour. Informational booklets can be found in the box posted near the stone wall along Mechanics Street.

Recently, DPC members gathered to pay tribute to these men and women by placing special wreaths on their gravestones. That day, the church welcomed Lydia Keene Williams, the great great granddaughter of Peter Jackson, who was laid to rest in 1859. A video of this event is available to view on the church’s website.

Visitors also will find a glimpse of the many ways that the congregation continues to act for social and racial justice as it moves forward with its Matthew 25 initiative and its stated focus of dismantling racism and intersectionality with poverty.

All are invited to join in these conversations and efforts. DPC’s Black History Month Homepage can be found at dtownpc.org under “Upcoming Events,” or at dtownpc.org/celebrating-black-history/.
