The Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition Committee is inviting all artists who live within a 25-mile radius of New Hope to enter its 90th Annual Art Exhibition that will be on display from Sept. 20 through Oct. 27.
Artist registration forms are available online at
phillipsmill.org. Entries will be accepted at Phillips’ Mill, 1½ miles north of New Hope on River Road, 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7.
Jurying will take place on Sept. 8. In 2018 more than $9,200 was awarded in prize money.
Stipulations for acceptance include: artist’s physical residence or studio must be located within a 25-mile radius of Phillips’ Mill. Work must be by a living artist, completed within the last five years, and never before exhibited at the Phillips’ Mill Art Exhibition. Artist must be at least 18 years old. The committee retains the right to refuse work that, in its judgment, does not meet the eligibility requirements.
Up to four artworks may be submitted.
Artist may submit one framed or with finished edges painting, graphic or other medium (excluding photographs, computer generated art or giclee paint reproductions) wired and ready for hanging and able to be stacked upright with protective cardboard without damage.
Artist may submit one free-standing sculpture not requiring electrical support or wall-hanging. Sculptors will be asked to provide a sculpture stand upon acceptance.
Artist may submit two unframed, matted prints, drawings, watercolors, oils, acrylics or other media.
Jurors for Painting and Graphics
James Brantley is a Philadelphia native who attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and completed a four-year Certificate program in painting. He also studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied 19th- and 20th-century art history. He began a career in public service at the Youth Study Center in Philadelphia as a Recreation Leader from 1974 until 1998. Brantley now paints full time; his paintings can be found in public and private collections. He is also passionate about the culinary arts.
Randall Exon is a representational painter whose work has centered on the landscape and the figure in the landscape. Most of his paintings are fictions made up entirely from collected sources and/or personal experience and memory.” He received his B.F.A. from Washburn University and later attended the University of Iowa, graduating with an M.F.A. in 1982. He has been teaching at Swarthmore College since 1982.
Stanley Bielen was born in the Podkarpackie region of Poland. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and is influenced by the long regional realist tradition called the Philadelphia School. He exhibits nationally and is represented in public and private collections including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Jurors for Sculpture
Won Choi is an artist working in abstract sculpture. Born in Daeku, South Korea, she received her initial training in metalsmithing and woodworking from Hong Ik College and from Seoul National University. She immigrated to the United States and studied metalsmithing and sculpture at Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited nationwide and internationally. She works and resides in Philadelphia.
Michael Grothusen is a mixed media sculptor who makes objects and installations, and has also completed two permanent public commissions for the City of Philadelphia. The desire to try to levitate in his studio led to a collaboration with painter Buy Shaver on a two-person exhibition, Matter, at Bucks County Community College in the fall of 2018. His contribution was a mobile that consisted of his body weight floating around the room on invisible currents of air.
This fall he will have four works in the Beijing Biennale in Beijing, China. He is an Associate Professor of Core Studies and Fine Arts/Sculpture at the University of the Arts.
The Phillips, Mill Art Exhibition is the first and most continuous art event exhibiting the works of Delaware Valley artists.
It’s not too late to become a patron or benefactor of the exhibition. Benefactors and patrons have the privilege of being among the first to view the exhibition at special receptions that are closed to the general public on Friday, Sept. 20.
