On Easter weekend, despite uncertain and unsettling times, FEAST (Feeding Everyone at Special Times) had a skeleton crew of volunteers preparing 3,000 meals for families from Bucks and Montgomery counties who otherwise would not have a holiday dinner.
Recipients picked up their meals curbside after 2 p.m. Saturday, the day before Easter, at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Warrington. The volunteers practiced social distancing while preparing the meals, which included ham, green beans, potatoes, bread and pie.
The organization said it followed all coronavirus guidelines and protocols to ensure the volunteers and recipients were safe.
“This is a challenge for us, and I didn’t know if we could do it, but the calls for meals just kept on coming,” said FEAST Executive Director and Co-founder John Clauss. “With everything that’s happening now, donations are down, but the requests for holiday meals are up.”
A limited number of Easter baskets also were distributed to families.
According to Feeding America, the food insecurity rate for Bucks County is 8%, or nearly 53,000 individuals, and for children, the rate is 12% or 16,000 kids. Since 2012 when FEAST was started, the organization has provided over 30,000 meals during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
