Blooming Glen Mennonite Church members enjoy volunteering at Care & Share; more help is needed

Posted
Since 1975, Care & Share Thrift Shoppes in Souderton has been a staple in the community.

The nonprofit organization is “volunteer run.” In a typical year, it takes over 110,000 volunteer hours for the business to operate. Due to the pandemic, many of its long-term volunteers are still uneasy about returning. This volunteer shortfall has decreased operating hours as well as the ability to open all of the Shoppes.

Since Care & Share’s debut, Blooming Glen Mennonite Church has sent volunteers to serve. When the church heard of this volunteer challenge, they decided to do something about it.

The church organized additional service opportunities, which allowed a broader age range of volunteers to get involved. In less than two months, the church has had volunteer groups serve six times, with another three opportunities quickly filling up.

“Newbie” volunteer Jodi Stewart-Moore said, “I have been donating to and shopping at Care and Share for years. I love their mission – keeping things out of landfills, offering affordable items to the community, and supporting international relief.

“When my church advertised that there was a need for volunteers, I signed up and am so glad I did. Not only were they well-organized, but I had the opportunity to socialize in a fun and safe atmosphere with new and old friends from my church while being part of the important work they do locally and globally.”

Another “Newbie” volunteer, Gretchen, is featured on Care & Share’s YouTube channel, about why she volunteers. Care & Share’s Volunteer Manager, Suzanne Kratz, is also on the YouTube page showing how you can “Volunteer – Socially Distant Style”!

As “amazing” as these acts of service are, Care & Share is still searching for those, ages 8+, who are comfortable serving. Volunteers should contact Suzanne Kratz at 215-723-0315 x113 or skratz@careandshareshoppes.org.
