Bishop visits Emmanuel Episcopal Quakertown

Posted

The Rt. Rev. Daniel G. P. Gutiérrez, leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, joined the congregation at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Quakertown Sunday, March 1, for a service celebrating faithfulness and dedication.

Bishop Gutiérrez led a service of Holy Communion and Confirmation. He was assisted by the Rev. Matthew Simpson, a deacon in the diocese, Canon Shawn Wamsley of the Diocesan staff, and the Rev. Robin Smith, extended supply priest at Emmanuel. In both the service and his sermon, the bishop shared a message of renewal and calling.

Although it was the first Sunday in Lent, a solemn season, the parish joyfully celebrated both the bishop’s visit and the confirmation of Pamela Cole of Quakertown. Confirmation is a sacramental rite in which a person reaffirms his or her commitment to his or her faith. The service was followed by a lively luncheon in the parish hall.

“Emmanuel is a wonderful church … filled with people seeking to proclaim the Good News,” the bishop said. Bishop Gutiérrez, the 16th bishop of the historic diocese, came to Philadelphia from Albuquerque, N.M., in 2016. He leads a district of 136 churches in five counties, and is committed to strengthening the church’s service by proclaiming the Gospel, empowering churches, and addressing pain and poverty.

Emmanuel Church, a 133-year-old congregation, was especially receptive to this message. The parish is working with the Diocese of Pennsylvania to develop plans for growth and outreach in its next century.

Emmanuel Church is located at the intersection of South Main and 9th streets at 560 S. Main St., Quakertown. Sunday services are held 10 a.m. Parish information and upcoming events are listed at emmanuelquakertown.org and on Facebook (Emmanuel Episcopal Church Quakertown).
