Beyond team spirit

Posted

I want to acknowledge and thank the Plumstead Senior Inter
Township League (ITL) team for the support and good will that they demonstrated on Friday Night (May 28) … it transcended baseball.

Plumstead was to play the Warrington A’s at Barness Park but because of the rain the game was canceled … but that did not stop Plumstead.

One of the Warrington players was reporting to U.S. Army boot camp on June 1 and Friday Night was to be his last game. The A’s planned to have refreshments and cake after the game to honor his sacrifice and commitment.

Because the game was to end late (around 10:30 p.m.) and Plumstead was going to be walking right past the As to the parking lot during the celebration we invited them to join us for the get-together on Wednesday … they accepted.

Long story short, the game was canceled at 7:15 p.m. and I called the Plumstead coach to let him know the Game was canceled. His first question to me was “Are you still having cake?” I told him we were, at 8:30 p.m. He said, “We will be there and we are on our way.”

Don’t you know it, about 8:15 p.m. the Plumstead coaching staff and just about the whole squad showed up to wish a young man they really didn’t know Godspeed.

That was such a classy gesture. They very easily could have packed it in for the night but they decided to drive 30 minutes in a driving rain storm to wish a young man they really don’t know the best of luck.

We were there to support a young man who was enlisting in the service to protect and defend all of us.

The leadership lesson the Plumstead coaching staff taught not only the young men of Plumstead but also of Warrington was priceless.

I truly believe organized sports is practice for life. We are using baseball to teach the lessons of winning, losing, hard work, teamwork, sacrifice. Baseball is just the vehicle we use to teach those lessons … and it is so much darn fun.

To the entire Plumstead Baseball Organization, your sons are in Good Hands with the coaches of your Senior ITL Team.

Coach Kelley, Warrington A’s
