Barbara Smith honored for work with ALS

Posted

The Today Show on May 7 honored moms at Rockefeller Center Plaza in New York, among them, Barbara Smith of Bucks County.

“I want to thank my son for nominating me to appear on the Plaza. The folks on the ‘Today Show’ were very nice,” Smith said. “I met some amazing women who had done some incredible things. Out of 20 of us there were only four highlighted and they were very deserving. I only wish the other 16 had been acknowledged in some way.”

She was hoping to have an opportunity to encourage awareness of ALS and how others can help ALS families as the battle the challenging disease. She had a one-liner prepared but couldn’t use it.

“I understand the constraints of time but met some women that used their restaurants to feed the hungry and help shop for food for hundreds that deserved some type of recognition. Additionally I asked if I could challenge Elon Musk to ‘eat a bug’ on SNL for ALS and had edible bugs with me thanks to Nora Stern. Elon the challenge is still on. It was humbling to be amongst these incredible women."

Smith’s son Jay, the founder of Livid Instruments, an Austin-based music technology company, was diagnosed with ALS several years ago. His mother has worked tirelessly to support community fundraisers and awareness events.
