Nini notches hat trick in setback

South Hunterdon girls’ soccer came up short by a whisker to Highland Park’s varsity squad, 5-4, Friday. The Eagles sub-varsity team, which will move up to varsity next year, received a quick schooling by highly ranked Highland Park, trailing by five goals before halftime. Undeterred, South Hunterdon hung tough and was able to notch a goal by freshman forward Devon Nini right before the half. The Eagles kept their momentum going in the second half with a goal by center midfielder Lauren Wendborn and two more by Nini for her first career hat trick. Goalkeeper Roxy Kreider finished with 12 saves for South Hunterdon.

Mastrich nets game-winner for boys’ soccer

South Hunterdon boys’ soccer won a thriller Thursday over Sussex Tech, 3-2. Down by a goal at the end of the first half, the Eagles tied the game off a free kick that was headed into the net by forward Patrick Ferry. Sussex came back to take the lead, which was quickly matched by left midfielder Paul Cally. The game-winner came off a corner kick that was neatly headed into the net by center midfielder Zach Mastrich. Also of note: 2011 All-Conference honorable mention goalkeeper Jonathan Wendeborn made 13 saves in backing up a much-improved defense for South Hunterdon.
