Moravian takes two from swim teams

Moravian Academy defeated the Quakertown boys’ (114-44) and girls’ (108-41) swim teams Wednesday. Mike Deirolf was second in the 50 free, missing first and a district-qualifying time by a tenth of a second with a time of 23.46. He, Zach Deirolf, Chris Cowen and Nick Bluder took the 200 free relay in 1:45.24. The girls’ 200 medley relay of Leah Kaighn, Rebecca Waddell, Alex Kluger and Vivian Haa was second, as was the boys’ 200 medley relay of Danny Reigh, Bluder and the Deirolfs. Kaighn was second in the 200 free. Kluger and Bluder were second in the 200 IM. Haa was runner-up in the 50 free. Kluger was also second in the 100 free.

The Quakertown boys’ and girls’ swim teams celebrated six winners at Saucon Valley on Thursday. Michael Deirolf won two events, the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. The Panthers actually claimed the top three spots in the 50 free; Nick Bluder was second and Robert Tooley took third. Zachary Deirolf was champ in the 100 breaststroke in 1:18.82. The team of Michael and Zach Deirolf, Bluder and Tooley captured the 200 free relay in 1:45.39. On the girls’ side, the team of Alex Kluger, Rebecca Waddell, Leah Kaighn and Vivian Haa touched the wall first in the 200 free relay. Individually, Kaighn was tops in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.27.

Prior to Tuesday’s game at Quakertown, the Panthers girls’ soccer team hadn’t beaten North Penn since 1992. That changed on Oct. 9, as Quakertown shut out the Maidens, 2-0. Shannon Gibat, assisted by Shelly Cowan, scored in the first half and Linzi Wolfe (Gibat) came through in the second. The Panthers held a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Rams lost in the quarterfinal round to CB South, which carried a 5-3 record in Pool B. The Titans lost in the semifinals to eventual runner-up William Tennent. CB East went 7-1 in Pool C. CB East defeats girls’ soccer

Quakertown girls’ soccer lost to CB East, 3-1, Tuesday. The Panthers and Patriots were tied, 1-1, at the half, but Annie Axenroth (assisted by Taylor Mysza) and Nicole Panella (assisted by Shaun Kane) beat Quakertown goalie Erinne Finlayson (8 saves) twice in the second half to pull out the victory. Kane and the Panthers’ Linzi Wolfe scored in the first half.
Girls’ soccer edged by North Penn

Quakertown girls’ soccer was defeated late by North Penn, 1-0, Friday, as Tina Miller assisted Elizabeth Ricci in the 75th minute. Quakertown was led by superb goalkeeping by Erinne Finlayson (five saves) and Emily Galluppi’s defending. The Panthers were outshot, 16-5.
Woulfe helps boys’ soccer to W

Kyle Woulfe netted a hat trick as Quakertown boys’ soccer won its first game in Suburban One Continental play since 2008 with a 4-1 victory Friday over North Penn. Woulfe scored all three of his goals in the second half. His first was assisted by Connor Floyd, who scored the lone goal in the first half off of a penalty kick. Woulfe’s second goal came via a penalty kick. Panthers ’keeper Nick Lapinski saved an early penalty kick to keep the game at 1-0.

Quakertown girls’ soccer lost to visiting Central Bucks South, 2-0, Wednesday. The score was 0-0 at the half, but Kelsey Mariner (assisted by Margo Fox) and Fox (assisted by Nicki Weiss) beat Panthers goalie Erinne Finlayson in the second half to help the Titans post the victory. Finlayson was superb despite allowing the two goals, saving 14 shots. Morgan Campbell had five saves for CB South.

Jess Tennett scored a pair of goals for the Rams, while Jess Csaszar, Kyra Preston and Ben Van Pelt added single goals. Emma McLaughlin and Josh Schwarz connected for the Panthers. Natasha Nagle stopped three shots on goal for Pennridge; Maddie Calder was credited with 17 saves for Quakertown.

Netting assists were Stephanie Thompson, Kelsey Farrel, Jordan Potynski, Scott and Schwarz. Maddie Calder pitched the shutout in goal for the 2-1 Panthers.
CB West holds off girls’ soccer

Quakertown girls’ soccer fell at Central Bucks West, 2-1, Thursday. The Bucks went ahead in the first half on a Quin McNamara goal. Shelly Cowan, assisted by Linzi Wolfe, answered for the Panthers early in the second half, but Erin McQuate fed Kelsey Horst for the game-winner in the 61 st minute to secure the victory for CB West. Erinne Finlayson saved six shots for Quakertown; Grace Bendon had three saves for the Bucks.

Linzi Wolfe and Shannon Gibat each scored two goals (Wolfe also had an assist) as Quakertown girls’ soccer outmuscled Springfield, 4-1, Tuesday. Erinne Finlayson made three saves in net for Quakertown, which received noteworthy defensive contributions from Devin Reed, Emily Galluppi (one assist) and Jenna Joseph. The Panthers held a decided advantage in shots, 21-5.
Field hockey dominates PW

Quakertown field hockey kicked off its 2012 campaign with a stellar, 7-1 victory over visiting Plymouth Whitemarsh Friday morning. “[It was a] big improvement and great win for Quakertown after falling to PW last year in the opener, 7-2,” Panthers head coach Peach Draper said. Freshman Emma McLaughlin and Megan Thompson each connected for two goals, while Sara Reigh, Josh Schwarz and Janelle Croisette added single goals. Schwarz (three), Thompson (two), Croisette and Stephanie Thompson chipped in assists. Sophomore Maddie Calder was strong in goal for Quakertown.

Linzi Wolfe and Line Kjaer each scored two goals and registered an assist as Quakertown girls’ soccer opened its 2012 campaign with a 5-1 victory Friday morning at Wissahickon. Jami Soriano contributed two assists. Shannon Gibat scored the game’s first goal. The Panthers outshot Wissahickon, 19-5. For Quakertown, Erinne Finlayson had four saves and Olivia Masseloff had one between the pipes. The defense was anchored by Lindsey Rathjens and Jess Minnichbach.
