Boys’ lacrosse romps in opener

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse dominated Owen J. Roberts, 17-8, in its district first-round match Tuesday. Matt Schmidt led all scorers with six goals, and Matt Milici had six assists. Sean McSherry had 12 “McSaves.” The Patriots led at the half, 8-2. Anthony Casselli and Matt Heim each added four goals; Zach Kane had two. Tyler Butler and Dustin Buchanan each came up with two caused turnovers. Butler had seven ground balls, as well.
Boys’ lacrosse too much for Pennridge

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse handled Pennridge, 14-5, Tuesday. The Patriots spread the ball around and had 10 different players put the ball in the net. CB East moves to 13-3 (9-2 in SOL) and Pennridge is 2-12 (1-9 in SOL). Matt Milici, Matt Heim, Cole Rushworth and Zach Kane all scored two goals for the Patriots. Matt Schmidt had a goal and four assists. Rushworth won 14 of 16 faceoffs, and Andrew Delbracco won five of six faceoffs. Defensively, the Patriots were led by: Tyler Butler (five ground balls, two caused turnovers), Dustin Buchanan (three ground balls, two caused turnovers) and Peter Donavan (three ground balls, two caused turnovers).
Hatters nip Patriots for second time

Hatboro-Horsham defeated Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse for the second time this season with an 11-10 victory Thursday in Holicong. The Hatters are a perfect 10-0 in the SOL Continental; the Patriots are 8-2. The game was tied at 9-9 in the fourth quarter, but Hatboro scored two of the next three goals to register the triumph. Matt Milici, Matt Schmidt and Matt Heim all finished with two goals. Cole Rushworth won 15 of 20 faceoffs. Sean McGovern and Sean McSherry made six and four saves, respectively. Tyler Butler and Dustin Buchanan each had seven ground balls.

Anthony Casselli and Matt Schmidt each deposited three goals as Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse walloped Souderton, 13-1, Tuesday. The Patriots outshot the Indians, 33-13. Matt Milici, Matt Heim and Cole Rushworth all added two goals. Rushworth also won 12 of 14 faceoffs. Pete Donavan and Dustin Buchanan had six and five ground balls, respectively.

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse won at North Penn, 11-2, Friday. The Patriots outscored the Knights in the final three quarters, 8-0. CB East held North Penn to six shots. Anthony Casselli had three goals and an assist to pace the Patriots. Matt Brown and Matt Schmidt each had two goals. Matt Milici registered five assists. Tyler Butler had six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Milici added five ground balls.
Boys’ lacrosse sinks CB West

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse needed overtime to erase CB West, 10-9, Monday night. The Patriots are now 10-2 overall (6-1 in SOL) on the season. The Bucks rallied to knot the game at 9-9 in the fourth quarter with a 6-2 surge. Cole Rushworth won 17 of 23 faceoffs for CB East. Sean McGovern made 14 saves. Matt Heim (three goals, one assist), Matt Milici (two goals, three assists) and Matt Schmidt (two goals) led the way offensively.
Boys’ lacrosse loses first conference game

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse lost at Hatboro-Horsham, 8-5, Thursday. It was the Patriots’ first setback in the SOL Continental. The Hatters improved to 6-0 in the conference, while the Patriots slipped to 5-1. Hatboro blanked CB East in both the first and fourth quarters. The Patriots outshot the Hatters, 30-28. Anthony Casselli (two goals, one assist) and Zach Kane (two goals) led CB East. Sean McGovern had 14 saves.

Trailing at the half, 4-2, Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse stepped up in the second half to post a 10-6 victory at Central Bucks South Tuesday. The Patriots held a 37-24 advantage in shots on goal. CB East’s Matt Heim led all scorers with four goals. Teammates Anthony Casselli and Zach Kane each dropped in two goals, while Matt Schmidt had three assists. Cole Rushworth won 13 of 20 faceoffs, and goalie Sean McGovern had 13 saves. For the Titans, Tyler McGee led the way with two goals and an assist. Connor Bechtel stepped up with nine ground balls, and Navy-bound senior Ryan Kelly registered 12 saves.
Boys’ lacrosse falls in OT

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse lost to Avon Grove, 9-8 in overtime, in a non-league game Saturday afternoon at War Memorial. Trailing 6-4 heading into the fourth, the Patriots battled back and scored three goals in the span of 4 minutes. Anthony Casselli tied the game on an excellent feed from Matt Schmidt with 16 seconds left to send the contest into overtime. In overtime, the Red Devils won the faceoff and advanced the ball into the box where Avon Grove coach Eric Jackson called for a timeout with 3:53 on the clock. Avon Grove called a play in the settled situation and found the matchup they wanted. At 3:23, Avon Grove’s Bryce Reid scored the game-winner on a dodge in man-to-man coverage. CB East dropped to 8-1 overall. Casselli had three goals to lead the Patriots. Sean McGovern recorded 20 saves.

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse got by Pennridge, 16-9, Friday at War Memorial Field. CB East moved to 8-0 and Pennridge fell to 1-6. The Patriots outshot the Rams, 40-21. Matt Milici led CB East with five goals, three assists and seven ground balls. Matt Heim added four goals and Anthony Casselli had three. Matt Schmidt contributed two goals and four assists. Cole Rushworth won 18 of 25 faceoffs.

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse defeated Pennsbury, 17-7, Wednesday. CB East improved to 7-0 and will face Pennridge on Friday night and Avon Grove on Saturday at War Memorial Field in Doylestown. Matt Schmidt and Matt Milici each netted four goals; Milici also contributed six assists. Geoff Kuhn, Matt Heim and Tyler Butler all added two goals. Sean McSherry and Sean McGovern amassed eight and 11 saves, respectively. Butler had nine ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Zach Kane contributed three assists. Tyler Nangle, Connor Hayden and Daniel Sutton all scored for New Hope. Max Wolf had 15 saves for the Lions.

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse defeated Souderton, 11-3, in SOL play at War Memorial Field on Friday. CB East had eight straight shutout quarters spanning three games until the Indians’ Cameron Trick scored with 4:11 remaining in the second quarter. CB East goalies Sean McSherry (six saves) and Sean McGovern (four saves) combined for the win. Matt Heim led the CB East scorers with a hat trick (three goals), and Cole Rushworth and Anthony Casselli each had two goals. Heim, Tyler Butler and Mike Eveland each had four ground balls. The Patriots improved to 5-0 (3-0 in SOL play) and will face New Hope-Solebury on Tuesday.

Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse defeated Germantown Academy, 11-0, in non-league play on Wednesday. CB East goalie Sean McSherry recorded seven saves and got the shutout behind outstanding defense led by Pete Donavan (four ground balls, two caused turnovers), Mike Eveland (four ground balls, two caused turnovers), Tyler Butler (one ground ball and two caused turnovers) and Dustin Buchanan (two caused turnovers). The Patriots committed no penalties and controlled the tempo of the game. On offense, CB East spread the ball around with seven different players scoring: Matt Schmidt (two goals, three assists), Matt Milici (two goals, two assists), Anthony Casselli (two goals), Matt Heim (one goal, two assists), Geoff Kuhn (one goal), Zach Kane (one goal, one assist) and Cole Rushworth (one goal). The Patriots moved to 4-0 (2-0 in SOL play) and face Souderton under the lights Friday night at War Memorial Field.

Matt Schmidt scored five goals and had two assists as Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse walloped North Penn, 14-1, Tuesday. The Knights scored their lone goal in the first quarter. Patriot goalies Sean McSherry, Sean McGovern and Bryan Szymanski combined to shut out the Knights the rest of the way. For CB East, Matt Milici had three goals and three assists and Matt Heim contributed three goals and an assist. The Patriots improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in SOL action. They outshot the Knights, 31-11.

Matt Schmidt scored four goals and Matt Milici added three goals and two assists as Central Bucks East boys’ lacrosse cruised past host Central Bucks West, 17-5, Thursday night. The Bucks led 3-2 after one quarter, but were unable to beat CB East goalie Sean McSherry (five saves) in the second half. Cole Rushworth won 19 of 22 faceoffs for the Patriots. Riley Kratzke and Jimmy Seykot each scored two goals for CB West. Junior goalie Mike Harvan was credited with 11 saves.
Rams drop first set, then roll over Patriots

Pennridge boys’ volleyball started slow but rebounded to down Central Bucks East, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17), Tuesday. Devon Rice and Evan Jacoby led the Rams with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Matt Ziegler had 35 assists and two aces. Mike Bollinger led the block parade with six, Alex Vellner had five and Henry Savage added three. Libero Christian Lizana registered 19 digs. For the Patriots, Nick Bennett amassed 13 kills, two blocks and six digs. Kyle Dolf added 10 kills and 14 assists, while Trevor Clemens had three kills and 13 assists.

Chase Vonder Schmalz’s heave at the buzzer landed an inch or two short as Central Bucks East boys’ basketball survived a comeback attempt from Central Bucks South, 59-58, Friday. The setback denied the Titans a share of the Suburban One League Continental Conference championship. Vonder Schmalz finished with 18 points for CB East. Joining him in double-digits for the Titans were Kevin Raymond and Matt Scamuffo, who each added 10. CB East junior Brendan McLaughlin led all scorers with 19. Teammate Matt Stauffer had 13 and Ben Kardane added 11. CB East’s Danny Reilly and Stauffer ripped down eight and seven rebounds, respectively. McLaughlin also contributed five assists.

Central Bucks East boys’ basketball posted a 13-5 advantage in the third quarter to defeat Quakertown, 43-34, Friday. Brendan McLaughlin (12) and Tommy Strasburger (10) reached double-digit points for the Patriots. Matt Stauffer added 8 in the winning effort. CB East shot 18-for-22 from the free throw line. McLaughlin was 8-for-10; Stauffer was 6-for-9. Stauffer also cleaned up on the boards with 10 rebounds.

The Patriots outscored the Indians in the fourth quarter, 19-11. McLaughlin and Matt Stauffer were a combined 14-for-19 from the charity stripe. McLaughlin finished with 18 points, while Stauffer had 15. Stauffer also added seven rebounds.

Brendan McLaughlin and Matt Stauffer led CB East with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Tommy Strasburger had a fine all-around game with 5 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. The Patriots shot 20-for-41 from the floor and 6-for-11 from three-point land to improve to 6-6 on the season.

Titans take down Patriots

Central Bucks South football downed visiting Central Bucks East, 34-13, Friday. Titans quarterback John Pileggi threw three touchdowns in the first half – two to Cale Mosher – and sophomore tailback Josh Adams had 132 yards on the ground on 26 attempts and two total touchdowns. Steve Veal had 114 yards receiving on seven catches. Vince Thompson Jr. had 92 yards on 19 carries and a TD for the Patriots; Zach Nelsen threw a touchdown pass to Brandon Ilkiw late in the fourth quarter.
Quakertown Invitational results

Quakertown High held its annual invitational girls’ volleyball tournament on Saturday. The host Panthers finished 3-5 in Pool A, which was won by Pennridge (5-3). The Rams lost in the quarterfinal round to CB South, which carried a 5-3 record in Pool B. The Titans lost in the semifinals to eventual runner-up William Tennent. CB East went 7-1 in Pool C. The Patriots lost to eventual champion Brandywine in the semifinals.
Girls’ volleyball comes up short

Central Bucks East girls’ volleyball lost to Methacton, 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 25-20), Tuesday. Courtney Kauffman led the Patriots with five blocks and tied for second with five kills, a number shared by outside hitter Rachel Clow. Clow also buried a team-high four aces, while Caroline Davis showcased her serving skills with three aces. Errors were costly for CB East: the Patriots committed 15 on serve and 13 on attack attempts.
