Girls’ basketball shows it’s better than record
Jan. 11 marked the halfway point for the Plumstead Christian girls’ basketball season. With new coaches and a new starting five, the girls have been forced to overcome the challenges of learning new plays, connecting as a team and finding their rhythm – all while striving to improve their 1-9 record.
The beginning of the season started strong. After only a few practices, the Lady Panthers were victorious in the first round of the Calvary Baptist Tip-Off Tournament against West Montgomery High School. But during the championship game against Calvary Christian Academy from Philadelphia, the Lady Panthers could not gain control over their opponents. With a tight schedule, the team continued to struggle with new offensive schemes and defensive plays as the season progressed. After many challenging games, senior co-captains Andrea Dunn and Kayla Roberts, along with juniors Paige Gresham, Sami Young and Abby Ciotta, worked hard to build some positive momentum for the team. With strong bench support from Brynna Hughes and Tori Roberts, the Lady Panthers are beginning to play to their potential. Plumstead’s first-year coach, Dan Smith, along with his assistant, Jenna Griest, are guiding the Lady Panthers to play their brand of basketball with intensity.
Within the last few weeks, it has become evident that the girls are hungry for a win. Despite their 1-9 record, the players are more aggressive than ever. Examples of the team’s more tenacious play were seen on Jan. 5 at Bristol High School when the Lady Panthers found themselves playing with more confidence and on Jan. 9 at Morrisville High School when the team continued to take control of the court. At its Jan. 11 game against Lower Moreland High School, the defense stepped up and played with a new level of aggression. The season record clearly does not tell the full story of the team or its potential. “This team plays its heart out,” said Coach Smith. “And that is what basketball is about.” With more than halfway to go, the Lady Panthers are prepared to finish the season strong.

Boys’ basketball dominates Upper Bucks
In what could be the final game of the long rivalry, Faith Christian Academy blew out Upper Bucks Christian. While the Lions had the game under wraps before the first quarter concluded, they never showed the Bucks mercy as they increased their 54-12 halftime lead to the final score of 86-26. Will Maynard was the high scorer for the Lions, finishing with 17 points while draining five 3-point shots. When asked about his night from behind the arc, Maynard said he “re-gained his confidence” and that “tonight was a good confidence game.” The top six Lions are seniors, including Maynard, and when asked how he felt about his teammates, he said, “They’re nice guys, I like playing with them.”
On the other hand, Upper Bucks has only one senior on the roster, Brendan Smith, who was their leading scorer with 12 points. Head coach Baron Smith, when questioned about his team’s performance, said he told his team they had to “be aggressive, set the tempo in your own house.” However, this was not the case, and despite an ugly loss, the 1996 Upper Bucks graduate and former player had nothing but respect for his rivals: “I give them a lot of respect, they have great players and a great coach.”
Both teams will continue to press on this season as Faith has this one season before losing its top six guys, and on the flipside, Smith will look for continued improvement in his young squad.

Boys' soccer shuts down Delco, 3-1
The New Hope-Solebury boys' soccer team faced off against Delaware County Christian on Tuesday, playing in honor of Ethan Toohey, equipped with his favorite color shown on the Lions' shin guards in green duct tape. Both teams came out well prepared. About 20 minutes into the first half, New Hope pulled ahead, 2-0, thanks to back-to-back goals by Matt Barile (sophomore), within the span of a minute. Jack Natale (sophomore) gave Barile a quick lead on the ball downfield to give him a breakaway and he capitalized with an easy chip over the goalie and single bounce into the net to give him his first goal of the game. The second goal was much easier as Barile tapped in a rebound after a grueling shot by Ben Musekari (freshman) that hit the right post of the goal. At the start of the second half, Delco Christian came back with a quick goal scored by Andrew Crisanti (senior), who, like Barile, also capitalized off one of his own teammate's shot deflections. But what really blew the game away was the penalty kick scored by New Hope senior captain Graham Smith after being fouled within Delco's own 18-yard line.
Barile was also seen in the game showing off some moves going down the field and splitting his defender through the legs with a kick with the back of his heel. Also some killer saves were made by Jaxon Vallely (senior), New Hope's goalkeeper, keeping the lead comfortable for the Lions. New Hope finished strong, with some strong defense, keeping and holding the lead against Delco Christian to extend its record to 4-1, and will be preparing for its next home game on Thursday, against Springfield at 3:45 p.m.

The rest of the game's scoring came from Lions all-everything tailback Julian Kaminoff, who finished the night with 135 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns. Kaminoff also played a solid safety position that helped anchor the Lions defense along with fellow senior Chris Warden. The game Friday night was played in front of a packed crowd, which was decked out in all green in support of fallen classmate Ethan Toohey. Warden said of the game, "Obviously this game was for Ethan, we wanted to go out and get our first win on our home field for him."
