Christian M. Hansen Jr.
Pediatrician to the poor
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, inspiration
Christian M. Hansen Jr., a pediatrician committed to civil rights and social justice, whose career took him from U.S. prisons, inner cities and Indian reservations, to one global hot spot after another, died Feb. 3 in Flemington, N.J., from pneumonia brought on by a rare bone marrow disease. He was 77.
“Chris,” to those who knew him, was born in Woodbury, N.J., on Aug. 17, 1932. The son of a Lutheran minister, he grew up in Camden, N.J., and attended Moorestown Friends School before going off to Haverford College and University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
Hansen credited Moorestown Friends and Haverford College with alerting him to issues of global justice. In his privately published autobiography, “In the Name of the Children” (2005), Hansen recalled inspiring visits to Moorestown Friends by the so-called Hiroshima Maidens (disfigured survivors of the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan in 1945) and the civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, as well as attending weekend work camps with school faculty in inner city Philadelphia.
After completing his residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1961, Hansen began a medical odyssey. With his wife, Alix, and his young family, Hansen moved to the White Mountain Apache Reservation in Arizona, where he worked for the U.S. Public Health Service, providing care for Native American children for a year. Hansen then joined the Peace Corps, taking his family to Ankara, Turkey, for two years.
Upon returning to the States, Hansen rejoined the U.S. Public Health Service, first in Aberdeen, S.D., then in the Mississippi Delta, where he helped pioneer the Tufts Delta Health Center in the town of Mound Bayou (whose welcome sign reads, “the largest U.S. Negro town, settled July 12, 1887, by ex-slaves of Joe Davis [brother of Confederate president Jefferson Davis], who conceived the idea before the Civil War”).
In 1969, Hansen returned north to settle down in New Hope. He helped found the Henry J. Austin Health Center in Trenton, N.J., before joining the faculty of Rutgers Medical School. With a home base to return to, Hansen took off on a seemingly endless number of short medical missions to global crisis spots including Nigeria, Vietnam, Iraq, Armenia, Rwanda, Kosovo and Haiti.
After Rutgers, Hansen worked at the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) in New Jersey for 20 years. Upon retirement, Hansen tutored men and women in preparation for their G.E.D. at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen.
Hansen made friends everywhere he went. Though a Quaker, he loved meeting the young U.S. soldiers who helped distribute food and medical supplies in Kurdistan at the end of the first Gulf War, and spoke of the powerful support the military can offer to humanitarian missions. He was as comfortable in prisons and embracing homeless people on the street as he was with his own family. Christmas and Thanksgiving mornings found him distributing turkey dinners among the projects in Trenton.
Hansen was hardly a saint; he was instinctively drawn to humanity, often recognizing humanity where others failed to see it. Above all, perhaps, he will be remembered for his playfulness and zest for life, his love of malapropisms and logic puzzles. He loved to sing ribald and ridiculous songs and imitate Peter Laurie. He loved radio-controlled airplanes, train sets and windup toys. He loved to watch European soccer.
Contrary to the wishes of his wife and children, he loved French pastries, potato chips and heavy cream on his cereal. More than anything, he loved setting off model rockets with his family. And he didn’t seem to care too much about just where they came down.
Hansen is survived by his wife, Alix, of 51 years, of New Hope; his children Max, Amy, Jonathan and Nathaniel; their spouses/partners Andrea Kurman Hansen, Mark Canright, Anne Hansen, Shunyi Wu; his grandchildren Oliver, Rebecca, Julian and Nathalie; his sister-in-law Annsi Stephano; and many devoted nephews, nieces and second cousins.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Haverford College, 370 Lancaster Ave., Haverford 19041.

During John’s teenage sports career, he was recognized as one of the finest soccer players in the suburban Philadelphia area. His leadership and soccer skills were instrumental in the teams for which he played winning a number of championships, both in high school and club level. Perhaps the highlight of his career was the opportunity to train with the Celtic Football Club in Glasgow, Scotland, considered to this day to be a world leader in professional soccer. John was especially passionate about trout fishing, golf, and all Philadelphia sports teams. He had a knack for remembering all sports trivia.
