Chip Mergott: Music Minute

Larry Knechtal

Larry Knechtal was a session man for the ages. A member of The Wrecking Crew, he played bass on the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and The Doors’ “Light My Fire.”

He played lead guitar on Bread’s “Guitar Man,” played organ on The Association’s “Never My Love,” and The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” played piano on Johnny Rivers’ “Rockin’ Pneumonia” and “Boogie Woogie Flu.”

He arranged and performed the piano part for one of the biggest records of the 1970s, Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

Larry Knechtal was truly a musician’s musician.

The Mergott Music Minute can be heard daily on WDVR fm 89.7. Tune in this Friday from 3 to 4 to hear a special show with Chip and The Bleecker Street Café’s Chris Poh.
