Bucks Special Olympics earns Program of the Year Award

Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) recently honored its Bucks County Local Program with the Program of the Year Award during its Leadership Conference Banquet in State College, on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Bucks County Local Program is more than just a program; it is a family. This program prides itself on not just getting to know an athlete’s or volunteer’s skill sets, but getting to know them personally and building relationships of trust, understanding and mutual respect within the program.

Led by George Massimini, the honored program has expanded training opportunities for its volunteers, which have led to expanded training opportunities for its athletes. Athletes who participate in this program are encouraged to take on greater roles at training sites by directing warm-ups, assisting volunteers in running drills, and acting as coaches in scrimmages.

Athletes in this program also participate in leadership positions, such as members of the Athlete Congress, roles on the local Athlete Leadership Team, acting as voting members on the management team, and working as trained athlete presenters for both the Healthy Athlete and the Fit 5 programs.
