DEP orders New Crushed Stone to halt mining

BIRGITTA WOLFE

The Department of Environmental Protection on Monday ordered the New Hope Crushed Stone quarry to immediately stop mining until its reclamation shortfall is made up, according to Solebury Township Supervisor Helen Tai.

Almost a year ago, DEP issued a compliance order stating the quarry was not meeting minimum standards outlined in the reclamation plan and requiring a Corrective Action Plan from the quarry.

After many delays, Tai explained, the CAP was approved in April and required that the shortfall be addressed by July 1.

The DEP has now determined that the quarry has failed to conduct reclamation activities to the minimum standards of the reclamation plan and the CAP, Tai stated.

Over the last one and a half years, along with Solebury School and the Primrose Creek Watershed Association, Solebury Township has been working with DEP to ensure that the quarry operates responsibly, she stated.

“Although I am frustrated that the quarry is not meeting its minimum obligations with respect to reclamation, I am grateful that DEP is taking a strong stance,” Tai said.
