Council Rock North graduate named Student of Year

Gabrielle Shepherd receives the Greater Newtown Exchange Club’s Student of the Year award from Elizabeth Soucar.

Council Rock High School North graduate Gabrielle Shepherd took top honors at the Greater Newtown Exchange Club’s (GNEC’s) annual June Core Creek Picnic where she received GNEC’s Student of the Year award.

The award and accompanying monetary gift is awarded annually to a winning student selected from GNEC’s Student of the Month winners. The win signifies the epitome of the winning student’s academic achievement, social outreach and service to others.

In addition to being a Distinguished Honor Roll student, Shepherd has participated in field hockey, winter track and lacrosse and received awards in those sports. Her club involvement and honors include Rho Kappa social studies honor society, Spanish Honors Society, National Honors Society, FBLA (Future business leaders of America) and attendance at Keystone Girls State where she participated in student government.

She was recently awarded an ROTC scholarship to the U.S. Naval academy.

Shepherd has taken part in numerous community activities including raising funds for the Lauren K. Talbot Memorial Fund, working in Powder Puff, an annual fundraiser held for the Lauren K. Talbot Memorial Fund, which pits teams of 11th-and 12th-grade girls against each other in flag football matches and helping run monthly meetings and raise money for SHARE (Students Helping Area Residents Effectively).

The most important mentors in Shepherd’s life are family, friends, teammates and coaches, who have helped shape who she is and what she plans to be. Her college goals include a year at Virginia Tech to study engineering after which she will utilize her ROTC scholarship to attend the Naval Academy as a cadet of the class of 2022, leading to a military career as a Naval officer.
