Chip Mergott: Music Minute

A remarkable career

James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain,” about the suicide of a friend, established him in 1970 as the originator of a new serious style of singer-songwriter.

His record company considered “Hey Mister That’s Me up on the Jukebox,” as an appropriately sad and introspective followup, but somewhere along the way the powers that be decided to release “You’ve Got a Friend” instead.

The positive and uplifting classic written by Carole King, is to date the only number one single in James Taylor’s remarkable career, and a record that broadened his appeal at a moment when he could have been typecast.

There’s no public record of which Warner Brothers executive made this call – but for James Taylor it was a life changing one.

The Mergott Music Minute is heard daily on WDVR FM 89.7.
