Town and Country hosts Mother’s Day Social, meet the playwright

Val Sharper as Sonia, and Joe O’Neil as Vanya, in Town and Country’s production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”

Treat the special lady in your life to the gift of laughter at Town & Country Players’ production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”

Written by Bucks County playwright Christopher Durang, the story is set in the bucolic Bucks County home of siblings Vanya and Sonia and takes place during a visit from their overly dramatic movie star sister, Masha, who swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike.

Director Andy McPhee describes the show as a clever comedy that is so well-written and so funny that his actors have trouble delivering the lines without laughing through rehearsal.

The Mother’s Day show starts at 2 p.m. May 13, and includes a complimentary glass of champagne at intermission to celebrate all the ladies in attendance.

Durang will meet with interested theatergoers immediately following the Saturday, May 19 evening performance of his play at the Town & Country Players Barn at 4158 York Road, Doylestown.

Hosted by McPhee, the Meet the Playwright event is open to cast, crew, and the public and is sure to offer wide-ranging discussions not just about the play but about playwriting, Broadway, and many other topics.

Durang, a Bucks County resident of many years, has written some 40 plays, including “Beyond Therapy,” “Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You,” and “Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them.”

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play and runs weekends from May 11 through May 26. Curtain time is 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, May 13 and 20.

Tickets can be ordered at townandcountryplayers.org or 1-800-838-3006 at $17 for adults. The show contains content that may not be suitable for all ages.
