Online fundraiser started to help keep couple together

Former Pennridge educator and husband face series of health challenges

A GoFundMe campaign has been established in support of a local couple with strong ties to the community.

Dr. Darlene S. Jones was a teacher in the Pennridge School District for more than 35 years. She was head of the science department for the district for many years and helped develop the scholastic science fair system throughout Pennsylvania, an accomplishment that is recognized by the Delaware Valley Science Fair, which named its Founder Award after her, according to her daughter, Sarah Jayne Jones - Gipson.

Richard Jones has also been very involved with community all his life. For him, it has been mostly through his faith and being active in his church, his daughter stated.

Over the past year, the couple have faced a series of medical challenges.

“During this last year, they both have had a series of truly horrible medical scares that left them in the position of needing around the clock care,” their daughter stated. “Dad has been in hospital three times - twice in ICU - and was discovered to have a variety of different ailments including a lung condition called Subclavian Steal Syndrome.

The level of care required forced them from their home.

“They’ve been married for 40 years so the threat of not being able to live together as a married couple was causing so much mental stress that it was adding further complications to their recovery efforts,” their daughter added.

Family members managed to find care for them both in a place where they can be together but they can no longer afford their medical expenses.

It costs $9,000 a month to keep them alive and together, according to their daughter, resulting in more than $60,000 in medical bills.

The family is now turning to the community for support. For those who wish to help the Jones or learn more about the couple, visit the campaign link at gofundme.com/richardanddarlene.
